Becoming Great
When it come to becoming great you need to challenge your fears and start living your dreams.
Becoming great means expanding your comfort zone and letting go. Challenge and overcome your fears.
I think of a time back when I would go to our local pool, called “The Rec.” Those summers were filled with swimming lessons, cooling off on a hot day, and friends having fun splashing each other. There was this super tall diving board that always seemed to have a line of people waiting to take their turn to leap, dive or drop into the pool . I just looked up and said, “No Way!” It just seemed too scary and unachievable.
One day a few of my close friends decided they wanted to go and jump off the high dive. They apparently had done it several times in the past, so it was nothing to them. For me, I was scared, but didn’t want to lead on that I hadn’t done it. I always wished I had the courage, but never made the commitment.
I made up some excuse how I liked the low dive better and could get a “better” dive that way. In secret I wanted to practice jumping from a height. So I did, for a few times.
Eventually, I pushed myself to get in line and head up the stairs that would certainly seal my fate. When I reached the top and could see how big of a drop it actually was, I was even more scared. I already decided to make the jump. The time had come to commit.
I walked to the end of high dive board, looked down, then closed my eyes and jumped.
Fractions of a second later I was feeling a rush of excitement and anxiety in my stomach. I was about to be scared. SPLASH!! I was under water and then came to the surface with a huge grin! I did it!
For a long time my fear controlled my behavior. I kept choosing the easy way out. To be average and ordinary. It was comfortable. Even if I knew there were greater things out there to achieve and experience, it’s easy to go with certainty. Still, that doesn’t give spice to life. It doesn’t help us grow.
When it comes to making a life change whether it’s making the commitment to get off the couch and start exercising, completing a 21 day Ultimate Reset Cleanse, or taking on P90X for the first time, it will be scary. It will be exciting and the re will be an unknown. Will this work?
You need to identify those times when you’re choosing to be comfortable. You have free choice.. choose what you do for a living, choose to get healthy and fit, etc. You get to choose how you react to the obstacles in life. Choosing to break through your fear instead of holding yourself back with make you great.
Here’s a challenge for you: take notice how fear controls your behaviors. Is it picking up a phone to call a client? Starting a workout program? Registering for a course? Are you choosing to be comfortable and ordinary instead of becoming great?
Once you have done that: Finish a project or task that you have been putting off. Don’t start anything new until it it done. Remove your mental road blocks. The only one holding yourself back is you. Step to the edge of the high dive and take that leap. You’re on your way to becoming great!
