This week I got some pretty interesting feedback from my friends on Facebook. Over the years I have seen people start and stop their fitness program over and over. I will often hear, “I am committed to a healthy and fit lifestyle.” or “It’s a lifestyle to be fit!” But when push comes to shove, that lifestyle sometimes changes. Is I asked the big question, “What are the top reasons people quit their exercise program when they were seeing good results?”
Reasons People Quit Exercising
It’s interesting what people said! Some were excuses, but I was really amazed at the wide range of answers. See if you can relate to any of these reasons people quit.
Not committed. Not seeing the results they wanted.
Don’t feel worthy
Lack of belief in themselves.
Not a strong enough “Why”
Some distraction knocks them off track and then they become discouraged.
They might feel they’ve “done enough” and found a new comfort spot to SIT awhile… though sadly- it won’t STAY there if they stopped!
Time, pain, fear of change and success
Cost of whatever it was, like a gym membership etc…
Because people start noticing how great they look…sometimes it backfires and you might feel you are “cured” and can stop pushing so hard because you look good. I know that sounds warped but it has happened to me.
Feeling overwhelmed with life’s challenges… BUT not done yet!
Family obligations, fear of success. Or, they were successful and now they think they can just do whatever they want and the pounds won’t come back.
Injury. I’ve had to do that before and then just never started up again.
Self sabotage
Skewed body image. Even though there are visible results, the person doesn’t see them.
I’d say continued support or encouragement!
You start getting good results, I mean GOOD results, and you don’t realize that it’s as much work, if not MORE to maintain! You say, “I can cheat a little,” then a little can become a lot. Then next thing you know, you’re going BACKWARDS. It’s a constant battle sometimes.
I would say loss of motivation. That is why it’s important to keep a circle of support. But that should have people who aren’t afraid to kick you butt.
Not happening fast enough. Seeing good results but expect even better. Also I feel once you see good results. I feel maintaining is much harder than trying to lose weight. With trying to lose weight you have a goal and seeing results keeps you going but once you get to your results, there is no big goal to reach any longer, no big changes being made or seen.
It turns into a job and its not fun or de-stressing any longer. They found another way to de stress.
Cost of a new wardrobe.
Moved into the camp ground for the summer and had no real place to work out …. Walking dogs, and swimming help keep busy but not the same as a full sweaty work out was what slowed me
Can’t afford it.
I think people lose sight of their own importance. 4 years ago I was doing P90X. And I stopped because life got really bad. I thought if I let it go I could focus on what was wrong. I wish I thought differently then. All that mattered was work, not life. Now 4 years later I’m back. And loving it!
Why Did I Want To Know The Reasons People Quit?
The reason I wanted to know the reasons people quit was that I wanted to find a way to help. So, I created a private online fitness group on Facebook to help people reach success, break through excuses and finally get to maintaining the lifestyle they want. The group will help people break through their excuses to get healthy and fit, and discover ways to indeed make it a lifestyle and maintain their results.
We took out the “I don’t have time” excuse because the workouts are only 10-25 minutes long. We took out the “life is too busy excuse” because we will be exercising first thing to start the day.
Our mantra: Get it done. Get it over with. Get results.
The group is called the Excuse Busters Breakfast Club and no doubt will help those people who truly want results and are willing to work “just a little bit” to get it.
