At some point in time everyone feels the effects of stress although for certain people the intensity is extreme. While we live in an exciting world of opportunity, we also live in a society that is fast-paced and demanding. Stress is not only the result of things that take place at work or in school but often at home as well. The problem is that if stress is not eliminated or greatly reduced, it can lead to both physical and mental health issues. With this being such a growing concern, I wanted to provide some stress busters that actually work!
Physical Activity Stress Busters
One of the most effective stress busters is physical activity, especially in the form of exercise. Although you can always go for a leisurely walk, actual fitness does wonders for alleviating the side effects associated with stress. The great thing about exercise is all the different possibilities. Regardless of your age or current physical condition, there are a number of exercises to enjoy and benefit from. Now, I do want to recommend that if you have a health issue it would be essential to first get approval from a doctor prior to starting any regimen but after getting approval, the journey toward a relatively stress-free life can begin.
Stress often creates what is known as a “fight or flight” reaction. This means when under undo stress, a person will either fight, which could consist of irritability or actual physical combativeness, or choose flight which simply means to walk away from the situation but without resolution. The response on the body is a high state of arousal. The problem is that often, the energy connected with the “fight or flight” reaction has nowhere to go, which means it remains in the body or even builds. With exercise, this high level of energy can be dissipated or burned off.
The bottom line is that exercise as stress busters work because it causes chemicals known as endorphins to be released into the bloodstream. These chemicals create a sense of calmness and relaxation. Below I listed a few of the more critical benefits of using exercise as a stress buster:
- Relaxes muscles
- Promotes good sleep
- Lowers high blood pressure
- Reduces risk of developing diabetes or having a heart attack or stroke.

Keep in mind that just 30 minutes of exercise a day will not only transform the way you look but also the way you feel. Therefore, you always want to take time to exercise, especially when combating stress.
- Walking or jogging
- Yoga
- Dance
- Aerobics
- Tai Chi
- Swimming
- Biking
- Tennis
Stress Busters with Proper Diet
Along with physical activity, your diet is important in relation to stress. For this, you want to make sure that you are always providing the body with proper nutrients through well-balanced meals. If preferred, you could choose an actual meal plan but overall, consuming lean proteins, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, and fresh fruits and vegetables will have a huge and positive impact on physical and mental health. In addition,
there are some foods that have been proven to be highly effective and natural stress busters with examples listed below.
Almonds, Pistachios, and Walnuts – These nuts are rich in vitamin E, which is a powerful antioxidant that promotes a healthy immune system. To get results all you need is just one-quarter cup a day of one type of nut or a combination of the three.
Avocados – High in potassium, raw avocado or homemade guacamole provides a flavorful and creamy treat that is great for fighting off the effects of stress
Oatmeal – One of the chemicals in the brain is called serotonin, which is what products a sense of relaxation. To encourage the body to produce additional serotonin, carbohydrates such as oatmeal work great.
Oranges – Multiple studies have shown that vitamin C works as an effective stress buster so eating oranges several times a week is also a consideration
Other Stress Busters
There are many other ways to reduce stress. Such as meditation, better sleep, aromatherapy, shutting off the Internet and other devices as well as just getting organized. I love Chalene Johnson’s 30 Day Push because because it is free and I was able to get a handle on so many things that caused stress and I did it in just 30 days. An awesome stress buster for sure. I also know a lot of B vitamins contribute to relaxation and reducing stress.
