Are you wanting to know how to start a workout routine? These 5 tips will help you. For years I struggled to figure out how to start a workout routine and actually stick with it. The thing I figured out is that I was putting many roadblocks in my way before I even started. My wish for you is that you apply these tips and get the results you are wanting to achieve.
As I share these tips on how to start a workout routine, I will address several obstacles people have. Those roadblocks that stop a person before they even start. So, let’s assume you have a big reason why you want to get healthy and fit and that you have been cleared by your doctor to exercise. Let’s also assume that you know the benefits of exercise and all the reasons to do it daily.
Tip 1: How to start a workout routine
Deciding to do something about it.
When I decided how to start a workout routine it was because I was at a “tipping point.” I was feeling fat. Heavier than I had ever been. Feeling low and frustrated that I had let myself go. I could see diabetes on the horizon as I had seen that disease plague many of my family members. But, I liked, my pizza, beer and Mountain Dew.
Have you ever experienced something like that? You decide to get fit, but look at your current situation and want to be healthy, fit and still cling to old habits that don’t serve you?
So, we decide. Perhaps it times out well with an advertisement for a gym membership, or an infomercial of a fitness program. Maybe it’s even the results you saw someone get on a Facebook or Instagram post.
A few questions most people ask themselves when it comes to deciding to take action: “Can I do This?” and “Will it work for me?” Many times people get stuck in this mental battle to answer the questions. And really, there is only one way to find out. That’s to take action, follow a plan, stick with it and see.
Comparison. I feel I need to address this issue right now. The comparison game stops people in their tracks. We often look at somebody’s results. Then look at where we are at and make a judgement that it doesn’t work. We compare and don’t even give the workouts a chance. Often people will look at someone’s one year progress and compare it to their own day 1. Thing is… the only person you are in competition with is the person you see staring back at you in the mirror.
Tip 2: How to start a workout routine
Just Start! And Do It NOW!
Here is something I see people do. They overthink their whole routine before it even starts. They come up with and All Or Nothing mentality. They have to have all the right equipment, shoes, workout gear, cookware, stocked fridge, etc. The thing that people don’t realize is that you can figure it out along the way. Take action with what you have…as long as you have a plan. Then adjust and refine alone the way. Getting fit and healthy is a process and you will learn things.
When I started I had a video player with the P90 fitness program to get me started, a resistance band and my bedroom to work out in. That was it. In time I bought some push-up stands and a set of dumbbells. That is where I started. I have added more and more over the years, but didn’t have it all to start. I would never have gotten fit had I waited.
Tip 3: How to start a workout routine
Have a Plan and Trust the Process
OK, here is where I am going to get on my soapbox a bit only because it worked for me and thousands of other people. Get one of thehome fitness programs from Beachbody. That takes away all the travel excuses of going to a gym, plus gives you a plan and trainer telling you what to do and how to do it right there in your living room.
I used to go to a gym and I loved it. But often I found myself guessing how to use equipment as I didn’t want to be a wuss and ask for help. Plus I just guessed what a good routine would be. Hence, very little results. I had no plan and you know what? I didn’t stick to it.
Now I know many who love the gym, love the classes and get great results. If that is you. ROCK ON! You probably are not a person who needs to read this blog post anyway. But if you are person who struggled just like me because you were guessing what to do, putting in the time for what you thought was a good workout and then weeks later not seeing any results, then trust me on this one…connect with a Beachbody Coach like me to point you in the right direction and then take action, follow the plan and trust the process.
LITTLE KNOWN SECRET… this is something not a lot of people consider. When you get one of these home fitness programs, give it a full shot and if it doesn’t work, then you can send it back for a full refund. A money back guarantee if you don’t see results? What’s not to love there?
Tip 4: How to start a workout routine
Kick your Excuses to the Curb
OK, might as well get these out in the open because you are going to use a lot of them and try to let yourself off the hook. Everyone has excuses. So… when you are facing one of these, tell yourself, “There it is. That’s not me. That’s a just mental programming. I am feel like this ____ , it’s time to move on. Thank You, I love you. Let’s rock this!” Then go workout!
Excuses will be things like
- I am too tired.
- I am too sore.
- I am bored.
- I am just not into it today. I’ll do doubles tomorrow.
- I’ll start Monday
- I don’t have the right equipment.
- It’s too late to exercise.
- I am traveling.
- I gotta get up early tomorrow.
- My kid got sick.
- I have too much on my plate right now.
- I’ll do it later.
- I hurt my (back, ankle, wrist, etc.)
- I didn’t get much sleep last night.
- Insert your own BS excuse here
Then kick them to the curb and get it done. There is nothing really stopping you. Even a 10 minute workout is better than nothing. Show up and do it.
