The big fall off the wagon. It think that happens to many.
I was really going along nicely with my fitness program. I was starting to see results and definitely had more energy. I couldn’t wait until I reached my goal weight. Then I attended a party or two over the past weekend. I felt sluggish on Monday so gave myself a “recovery” day. During that week I kept telling myself I would double up on workouts, but I never did. As a matter of fact, I only worked out one time that week. I also had his and miss healthy meals. Within two weeks I felt my clothing get tighter and I felt drained of energy and just didn’t feel like working out. I eventually stopped exercise altogether as a big project came up at work and demanded more of my time. I said I would start next month. Months passed and I regained the weight I had lost plus added on a few more pounds.
Sound familiar? I’m sure people feel that they fade away each day from reaching their goals. So, you had this fall off the wagon. Now what? Here’s a simple solution: Get back on the wagon! And try to get back on the wagon as soon as possible.
Life happens. Situations happen. Sometimes we get in our own way. Nobody is perfect. The thing is to not let it get you totally down and take you out of the game. Just know that you are normal and this falling off the wagon happens to just about everyone.
Keep this in mind. One slip up or deviation from your plan is not going to totally derail you. Missing a workout or two or making poor food choices on one weekend isn’t going to make you fat and unhealthy. It doesn’t mean you have to back to the beginning of your workout plan and start over.
The thing is, you don’t want it to spin out of control into a spiral of bad habits and unhealthy eating. Checking in with yourself weekly through body measurements and weighing in can have a positive effect to stay on track. I should mention that I am not a fan of the scale as it does not reveal our true health, but it is a good way to check in and stay on track.
Chances are, if you have a bad weekend fall off the wagon and you get back on the wagon, you will typically be back to your normal plan, weight and measurements by the end of the week. Your body will usually compensate for a meal or two that may not have been the healthiest.
One of the toughest things people face when getting back on the wagon is beating themselves up for falling off in the first place. Then there’s the excuses and rationalizing that occur for not getting back on the wagon sooner. Maybe it’s time, work, resources, yada yada. The reality is that it’s all BS. If getting healthy and fit is important, then you must find that reason WHY to get it done.
Post Your Why in various places where you will see them. Post photos of goals you want to achieve, whether is looking good for a vacation, getting ready for a wedding or getting a lean, ripped body. Use these posts as fuel to bust through any excuses you may be letting sneak into your brain.
Then set a time to get your exercise in. For many people, getting up a little earlier is the ideal time. Yes, this goes for you “I’m not a morning person” people!
