Do you ever wonder how to stay consistent with exercise?
I found this to be a real struggle in the past. I would often set some sort of huge goal and then if I got sidetracked, I either set smaller goals or set that goal aside and chalked it up to “unimportant at this time.” This would become a typical cycle. I knew I needed to exercise, but frankly, I found it boring, tedious and a big pain in the butt. Still I discovered how to stay consistent with exercise and want to share what worked for me. I hope you can make use of them!
How To Stay Consistent With Exercise
Be selfish!
The name of this blog is “Put Yourself First.” You need to do that. Nobody is going to put in the work for you. Life will get in the way. Some people with try to sabotage your progress. There will be obstacles. You must do this for YOU and put yourself as priority number one! This will be hard for you busy parents out there. But as the saying goes.. “you need to secure your own oxygen mask before you can help others” makes a lot of sense. And it’s true!
Create a plan!
Now, obviously you need to have some sort of health and fitness goals. I think the best one is just to “show up and be consistent!” Still, you need to right plan that will help you move toward your goals in a very systematic way. If you already have a plan, great! Execute it! If you do not, I have a form below you can complete and I will help you with a few options. I like to think in monthly increments. “What will I accomplish this month?” even if I am doing a program like Body Beast or P90X3, I still think of the month at hand. I get great plans on how to stay consistent with exercise here.
Day by day!
While it’s awesome to marvel at all those before and after photos out there. And to visualize what it will be like when you reach the goals you have, you must approach your plan on a day by day basis. Just strive to improve to be a little better than the day before. This will lead to a compound effect and will add up the benefits for you over time. Some people may call this “baby steps” or “slow progress.” And that will trump anything over those weekend warriors who try to conquer P90X on Saturday and Sunday!
Adopt a “No Matter What” attitude and act upon it!
This means, you are doing to show up and get your exercise in no matter what, every day. Even if it means you need to modify or shorten the length of your workout. In other words, Just Do It!
Get up early and get it done!
This is not a very popular tip on how to stay consistent with exercise. Still, this is why you get up early and exercise. Because if you don’t your day’s events will take you out of the game. Now, I know this is a generalization and people do get to the gym after work. That’s what I used to do. I said, “no matter what” and then as soon as I got home from work, I got my workout done. But to tell you the truth, I was often tired, felt like procrastinating, and came up with many excuses and would find myself cutting corners in my workouts just to get it done. BUT, when I got up before work, (I AM NOT A MORNING PERSON), I found I was under the clock, no time to waste, drank my coffee or Energy and Endurance preworkout energy drink, and then got it done! And you know what? The rest of the day I had more energy, felt better and happier. I was more pleasant to be around. And when I got home from a tiring day at the office, I had no “I gotta workout, but I don’t feel like it” words floating in my head! I felt empowered!
