Why You Need An Emergency Food Plan
I think everyone needs an emergency food plan. Let’s face it. Emergencies happen. Whether it is a big natural disaster or just the fact that you are super hungry and there’s nothing by fast food insight. Depending on your perspective, it can be a matter of survival or sabotage.
Emergency Food Plan Scenarios
So, for the moment let’s take the scenario that you have been committed to your health and fitness and you are in a situation where you are diving your car in an unfamiliar city and options consist of building donning big yellow arches, a bell, a BK swoosh, or a red roof top. All of them scream, “pick me, pick me!” Your brain keeps justifying that there must be healthy items on the menu, let’s try one of these places. Your other brain knows that once those amazing tempting aromas kick in as you near the building, that temptation will take over and all options will be “justified” by doing double workouts the next day. I know…totally hypothetical, right?
Or perhaps this one. Your alarm did not go off because of a power outage and you are rushing to get out the door. No time to make a lunch. You’ll hopefully grab something healthy at the gas station at lunch time.
I know what you are saying. These aren’t big emergencies. BUT, when you are hungry and tempted they sure can turn into one. You need and Emergency Food Plan.
Your Emergency Food Plan
When creating your Emergency Food Plan, make sure you have to following things on hand, whether it be in a Tupperware container under the seat in your car or somewhere tucked away in the file cabinet at work. Label it EMERGENCY FOOD PLAN just so you don’t mindlessly munch the food away when you have a hankering for a snack mid afternoon.
Have these always on hand for your Emergency Food Plan:
- Premium, high quality Meal Replacement Shake (MRS) in a single serving packet. Also have a shaker cup (I like the Blender Bottle) on hand. This is perfect option in a pinch because all you need is cold water and the powder. Shake it up and it’s totally satisfying. I have tried many brands on the market. My top choice is Shakeology. I have been using Shakeology for 4 years as of this writing and it’s the only one I keep on hand. I have a few others I like, but they don’t even come close to what this MRS provides. It’s a no brainer in my book!
- Raw Almonds with freeze dried fruit. This is the perfect combo for energy, fiber and keeping you satiated or full to get you through the emergency.
- Quality Protein Bars (only do this option for the office file cabinet. Not in your car if you live in a warm climate). Be sure to check the ingredients for quality and sugar content. Choose the ones with whey protein instead of soy and choose protein concentrate when possible instead of isolate.
I know this isn’t a super long list of options, but it is a simple to put together list for your emergency food plan.
When it comes to a real natural disaster type of emergency, these are still great options to have in your emergency food plan. True, you will need water, but you probably would need that anyway. So while this may not work in all emergencies, it will work for most!
The important this is that you will have healthy food while you are in “survival mode.”
